Bourdeau Contracting LLC. : Commercial Standing Seam Roofing

Standing seam metal roofing is a concealed fastener roofing system. It is most popular for its beauty, durability, longevity, simplicity, versatility, energy efficiency, and its remarkably clean, bold looks.

Why Choose Standing Seam Roofing

If looks matter to you, the Standing seam is a high-end upgrade and an undisputed step up in quality and longevity from the classic corrugated and ribbed style metal roofs.

The improved design captures the great protection and durability of metal with ultra-sleek looks that metal roofs are not usually known for.

Types of Standing Seam Roofs

One of the fastest systems to install, each panel has clips and concealed fasteners that gives them a uniform appearance.

In addition, they are mechanically seamed together after they are attached on the roof using hand crimpers or a special manufacturer-designed machine.

Mechanically-seamed systems are efficient for properties with low-slope roofing design. The material of choice for these projects are both steel or aluminium standing seams.

This involves panels with a raised interlocking seam on the edge that have a hidden fastening channel along the length of the side of each panel.

Their appearance is similar to vinyl siding panels. The fastening channel appears as elongated holes that allow the fastener to reach inside and lock the two panels together.

Manufacturers create nail-hem panels using various materials and additional coating. Most common materials include stainless steel and aluminium.

Snap-lock systems have covered screws and are the easiest and fastest to install. Snap-lock systems secure the clips on the roof deck and hold the panels in place.

Additionally, properties, where hot seasons prevail frequently, have snap-lock panels because they allow full thermal panel movement.

However, unlike mechanically-seamed panels, there is no additional crimping for full seam involved with snap-locked seams. They are also available in steel, aluminium, and galvanized iron metal sheets.

Traditional metal roofing assembles and locks wide metal panels together with caulk and nails. A standing seam metal roof variant that overlaps sheets and locks them together in the same traditional manner exists.

However, instead of caulk, the exposed screws where it derives its name has a rubber grommet or washer that ensures an airtight seal.

They are the cheapest standing seam metal roofing style available. In contrast, they require regular maintenance and screw replacement after 12-15 years in service.

Pros and Cons of Standing Seam Roofs

PROS

Standing Seam Roofs weigh less than asphalt shingles and offer better protection against harsh weather conditions. Additionally, the roofing materials won’t crack, warp, or rot, meaning it’s one of the most durable roofing materials available.

Beautiful

Standing Seam systems are more aesthetically pleasing and visually versatile.

Available in many fade-resistant colors, these roofs have concealed fasteners for a clean and tailored look that is maintenance-free. Never needing cleaning, they resist streaking and staining too.

Weather Resistant

Standing Seam Roofs are extremely resistant to snow and ice formation. With ice sliding right off and not building up to form ice dams. It can also withstand strong winds, making it ideal for blizzard climates.

Recyclable

Standing Seam Roofs not only have 25-95% recycled content, depending on the material used, but are also 100% recyclable at the end of their life as a roof.

Durable

Standing Seam Roofs can last 40-70 years, depending on the material. While it’s not invincible to damage, they are tough and durable. Will not absorb water or become waterlogged, will not rot or support insect infestation and comes with Lifetime Limited Warranty.

Safe

Metal roofs will not spark and ignite into flames during a wildfire or lightning strike.

Multiple Options

When it comes to colors, materials, widths and shapes, Standing Seam Roofs can offer you a wide variety of options. You can choose between steel, aluminium, metal and copper and zinc, in many different color options.

Maintenance

If you lead a busy lifestyle and don’t have much time to maintain your roofing system, these roofs aren’t anything to worry about. As it stands, they’re one of the most low-maintenance roofing materials available since they’re coated in zinc-aluminium alloy that allow them to resist corrosion for a near indefinite amount of time.

Energy-Efficient

Another benefit you get is energy efficiency. With the highly reflective paints that are factory-applied to the roof’s surface, they can reflect solar radiant heat, which can reduce cooling costs by 10-25%.

CONS

Standing seam metal roofs are faster to install, more durable, and highly effective. However, like any other roofing system and material, it has some downsides.

Price

The durability of the roof comes with a price. The thicker the metal material for your roof, the more expensive it becomes.

Can be dented

Although designed to withstand decades of abuse from extreme weather, they can still be dented by extreme weather or falling branches.

Noisy

They could be noisier than other types of roofing, especially during a heavy rain or thunderstorm, but extra layers of solid sheathing usually minimize the sound.

Though they may be a more expensive option, the long lifespan and added benefits make it worth the cost increase for someone looking to get more from their roof.

How long do Standing Seam Metal roofs last?

A well-installed standing seam metal roof system can last for more than 50 years.

How are Standing Seam Metal Roofs attached?

Standing seam consists of sheet metal roofing panels joined side by side and attached to the roofing deck with concealed fasteners. The connecting point where the two separate metal panels meet forms a vertically pointed rib or a seam that is one inch to an inch and a half high.

Can you paint a Standing Seam Metal Roof?

Yes, you can! As long as you prepare the surface of your roof correctly, choose the right primers, paints and sealants, and apply your products correctly, painting your metal roof can extend its life and help make your home more energy-efficient.
